Omtatah, a vocal human rights advocate was born and raised in Teso South where he was baptized in the Anglican Church.

Born in 1964, Okiya Omtatah’s age is 60 years as of 2024. He grew up in Luhya community, the only boy in a family of caring parents and four sisters.

Education and career background

Omtatah started schooling at Kwang’aru Primary School in 1971. He later attended St. Peters School in Mukumu only to sit for his KCSE exams in 1981. In 1983, Omtatah cleared his Form 6 studies at Tudunyo College.

The education-thirsty Omtatah qualified to join the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce. Instead, he enrolled at St. Augustine in Mabanga, Bungoma for a Diploma in Philosophy.

He later became an activist upon joining the Kenya Polytechnic University for a two-year diploma in Mechanical and Automotive Engineering.
