History of Dedan Kimathi University Since 1972: From a Constituent of JKUAT to the Chartered DeKUT

Dedan Kimathi University of Technology popularly called DeKUT is a public higher learning institution located in Nyeri, Kenya. At first a technical institute, it is now a full-fledged campus. The history of Dedan Kimathi University dates back to the early 70s.

The university is named after Dedan Kimathi, a prominent freedom fighter and leader in the Mau Mau uprising against British colonial rule in Kenya.

1. Founding as Kimathi Institute of Technology

In 1972, the institution was established as the Kimathi Institute of Technology (KIT) to offer technical and vocational training in various fields.

It would later become a college.

2. Transition to Dedan Kimathi University College of Technology

In 2007, KIT underwent a significant transformation and was upgraded to a university constituent college under Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

It was named Dedan Kimathi University College of Technology (DeKUT) in honor of Dedan Kimathi.

3. Attainment of Full University Status

In 2012, DeKUT achieved full university status and became a chartered public university in Kenya.

It gained autonomy in governance and administration.
