The Azimio brigade headed by Raila Odinga has named 5 members among them Wiper Leader Kalonzo to lead handshake talks. The new dialogue committee is tasked to engage the Kenya Kwanza government on critical issues raised during the recently stalled demonstration.

Audit of the 2022 general election, high cost of living, and reconstitution of IEBC are some of the issues that the bi-partisan team will look into.

Apart from service to Kenyans, the underway talks are expected to push for the inclusion of opposition principals in the decision-making table.

Those appointed to revive Azimio-Kenya Kwanza talks are;

  1. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka
  2. Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi
  3. DAP Party leader Eugene Wamalwa
  4. Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni
  5. Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi

The initial condition is as follows;

“Our position remains that no party to these negotiations can claim a right to determine for the other what to raise and what not to raise.

Azimio is keen on a time-bound programme of talks that should take one month beginning August 1, 2023.”

Azimio statement.

In his defence, the head of state had this to say.

“There are other leaders saying that the issues are yet to be discussed. What about the cost of living? This is already in our manifesto. It cannot be solved the way they want; through maandamano and other antics.

We are already implementing the manifesto that is moving towards lowering the cost of living. Fertiliser will soon cost Ksh. 2,500. We have a whole program that will be catered towards that.”

President Ruto.

Kenya Kwanza is yet to release a list of dialogue reps.

The appointment of Kalonzo to lead handshake talks is a cause of contention among NARC members who preferred former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni.
