Boniface Mwangi biography

Mwangi is a frontliner in the pursuit of freedom, a course he has been working on since childhood.

Born at Taveta on July 10th, 1983, the age of Boniface Mwangi.

Childhood and education qualifications

Mwangi Boniface, a fifth born in a low income family, was raised in a humble background at Taveta. 

He first met his District Officer father at Kitobo near the Kenya-Tanzania border at age 14.

In 1986 Mwangi’s mother relocated to Ngara, Nairobi where he joined the Akorino denomination and was baptized as Haroun.

Thereafter, he moved back to Nyeri to stay with his grandparents.

He briefly schooled at Maganjo Primary in Nyeri before proceeding his studies at Pangani Primary School in Nairobi.

It’s about this time that his mother ditched the Akorino denomination for the Gospel of God Church.

In 1995 Mwangi ran away from school for breaking a window and was avoiding punishment.

He fled to Mombasa but was later arrested and remanded at the Kabete Juvenile Remand Home.

Mwangi Bonface was later sentenced to seven years at the Getathuru Approved School. He was shortly transferred to Othaya Approved School where he would lead a strike in 1997.

Unfortunately, he was expelled in 1998 after a few months of being admitted to Kabete Approved School.

Career background

In 2005, Mwangi became a freelance photographer at Standard Group.An excellent coverage of the 2007 post election violence brought him to fame.

In 2009, he initiated a hub for artists called Pawa254.

Mwangi eventually completed high school in 2016 at the age of 34 years. Within the same year, he published the autobiography “Unbounded.” 

In 2017, Mwangi unsuccessfully contested the Starehe parliamentary seat.

In 2020, Mwangi released the film “Sofie” depicting his personal life experiences.

Some of the awards bagged so far are as follows including the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year Award (2008, 2010) for his exceptional photojournalism skills.
