What is the cause of Londiani accident? On 30 June 2023, a lorry carrying a shipping container lost control at Londiani in Kericho County resulting in a grisly accident.  Suffering uncountable damages are transit vehicles, minibuses, private cars, boda bodas, market stalls, traders, and pedestrians.

What happened at Londiani? At least 55 people lost their lives with only 30 survivors fighting for their lives in various hospitals. Locals say Londiani has claimed several lives for among other reasons poor enforcement of traffic rules. Trading by the roadside and lack of slow bumps are some of the initial blames.

Speaking at the incident, police officers confirmed that a lorry lost control and rammed into several other vehicles at Londiani junction.

It all happened even as market traders were busy transacting with travellers and passersby.

The accident has been described as the deadliest traffic collision in recent history.

About 30 people who were rescued from the carnage are fighting for their lives in nearby health centres.

Londiani accident condolences

President Ruto led other Kenyans in mourning with loved ones as the body identification exercise is ongoing.

Messages of condolence from political icons read as follows.

“The country mourns with the families who have lost loved ones in a horrific road accident in Londiani, Kericho County. It is distressing that some of the fatalities are young people with a promising future and business people who were on their daily chores.

We pray for the speedy recovery of all survivors; you are in our thoughts. We urge motorists to be extra cautious on roads, especially now when we are experiencing heavy rainfall.”

President William Ruto.

The second in command had this to say.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones and quick recovery to the survivors of this tragic road accident. I urge maximum care on our roads at all times by all road users.”

DP Rigathi Gachagua.

The former Prime Minister also expressed his empathy.

“This is a sad day for our country…as many children have been orphaned and many widowed… To the injured, we wish them quick recovery.”

ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The third in command posted on Twitter saying;

“I condole with the families that have lost their loved ones following today evening’s fatal accident at Londiani, Kericho County. The accident is a tragic and unfortunate event. I wish all the survivors a quick recovery.”

Super CS Musalia Mudavadi.

The shock-struck transport minister had this to say upon visiting the bloody site.

Stated at a visit to the site that it was a “painful”, “terrible” tragedy and promised to introduce new safety measures. He also said to reporters that “Investigations have been launched to establish the cause of this accident but we urge drivers to be cautious and follow the rules.”

Investigations are ongoing to establish preventive measures, and the extent of damage to lives and properties.

Meanwhile, police reports indicate that the main cause of Londiani accident 2023 is lost control and public negligence on traffic rules.
