1. TUM was established in 1948

The campus is a brainchild of consultations initiated by Sir Philip Mitchell in 1948 between The Aga Khan, the Sultan of Zanzibar, the Secretary of State for the colonies, Sir Bernard Reilly, and H. M. Treasury.

TUM started as the Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education in 1948.

2. Initial courses in business, art, and religion

TUM initially offered programs tailored to the local community, in commerce, craft, and religion.

In 1966, the institution changed its name to the Mombasa Technical Institute with an emphasis in technical and applied sciences.

3. Transition to National Polytechnic

In 1976, the Mombasa Technical Institute was incorporated as the Mombasa Polytechnic.

The new phase opened doors to more courses in technical and vocational areas including business, applied sciences, and engineering.

4. Continued growth and expansion

Mombasa Polytechnic gradually expanded its infrastructure and study programs amid surging enrolment.

The institution also began collaborating with other universities and organizations both nationally and internationally.

5. TUM became a university college in 2007

In 2007, Mombasa Polytechnic was upgraded and renamed the Mombasa Polytechnic University College (MPUC).

As a result, MPUC started offering degree programs in collaboration with the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

6. TUM charted into a university in 2013

In 2013, MPUC was chartered as the Technical University of Mombasa.

TUM has since tripled its programs and increased its student population to about 15,000.

7. Vision and Mission at TUM

TUM’s vision is ‘A Technical University of Global Excellence in Advancing Knowledge, Science and Technology.’

On the other hand, TUM’s mission is ‘To advance knowledge and its practical application through teaching, research, and innovation to serve both industry and the community.’

TUM’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Leila Abubakar is committed for even greater possibilities with the recently introduced Campus Cura Portal.
