History of Catholic University of East Africa Since 1984, CUEA Campuses

The history of Catholic University of East Africa dates back to the mid-80s when it was established as a graduate school of theology. CUEA has since expanded to become a prestigious institution across the region.

The varsity is a brainchild of the missionary work initiated in the twentieth century. Its now under the management of the Vice Chancellor called Very Rev. Prof. Stephen Mbugua Ngari.

CUEA is formally accredited by the Commission for University Education in Kenya.

When was Catholic University founded?

1. CUEA was established in 1984

The Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa started operating in 1984.

The institution was formally opened by Pope John Paul II in 1985.

2. Institution was renamed CUEA in 1992

In 1992, the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa was renamed the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa.

About 2009, CUEA was expanded to Eldoret and Nakuru.

3. CUEA is located in Langata Estate

The Catholic University of East Africa is located along Bogani East Road within Langata Estate, Nairobi, Kenya.

In 2014, the CUEA library building was recognized as the Best Green Building in Kenya.

4. CUEA CBD Campus opened in 2013

The Catholic University of East Africa opened a new campus in I&M Tower along Kenyatta Avenue.

Enrolment in the CBD satellite campus is now about one thousand learners

5. Cardinal Otunga Scholarship Fund

Catholic University runs the Cardinal Otunga Scholarship Fund in honour of CUEA founder Maurice Cardinal Michael Otunga.

The fund aims to sponsor needy and deserving students to clear their tuition fees.

6. CUEA runs constituent and affiliated colleges

Catholic University operated 5 constituent colleges and several courses enlisted on CUEA student portal.

The constituent courses are;

  • Marist International University College
  • Tangaza University College
  • Hekima University College
  • Regina Pacis University College
  • Uzima University College

The affiliated colleges are as follows;

  • Don Bosco College in Moshi, Tanzania
  • Christ the King Major Seminary
  • The Spiritan Seminary
  • AMECEA Pastoral Institute
  • Chemichemi ya Uzima Center

7. Catholic University brags notable alumni

A good number of powerful businessmen and politicians are graduates from the Catholic University of East Africa.

These include First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto and Uasin Gishu County senator Jackson Mandago.
