President Ruto has unveiled Kiabonyoru town as the most suitable location for the proposed Nyamira University. In his recent Kisii tour, the Head of State initiated the midwifery that will soon place the history of Nyamira University on roller coasters.

The executive pronouncement comes amid a heated conflict of interest from seven other potential sites. These include Ekerubo Gietai, Senator Kebaso Primary School, Sere, Riakimai, Kiabonyoru High School, Simbauti, and Sengera Manga.

History of Nyamira University

Kiabonyoru which lies on the border of Borabu Constituency and North Mugirango Constituency was picked because of its proximity to Nyamira Town which lies about 12 Kilometers to the North West.

Below is a review of the other proposed sites that have since been abandoned for reasons ranging from political good will to land size, topology, and accessibility.

  2. Simbauti Farm in Borabu
  3. Kiabonyoru High School
  4. Ikonge in North Mugirango
  5. Riakimai in West Mugirango
  6. Kiamogake in North Mugirango
  7. Sengera Manga in Kitutu Masaba
  8. Bomodo Primary in West Mugirango
  9. Manga Model School in Kitutu Masaba
  10. Senator Kebaso High School in West Mugirango

President Ruto who pledged Ksh. 500 million, further asked Kisii University management to progress with the establishment of Nyamira University.

A committee of political leaders working closely with officials from the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders includes the following.

  • Jerusha Momanyi -Nyamira Woman Rep
  • Joash Nyamoko – North Mugirango Mp
  • Steve Mogaka – West Mugirango Mp
  • Clive Gisairo – Kitutu Masaba Mp
  • Patrick Osero – Borabu Mp
  • Rene Nyakerario – Nominated MP
  • Amos Nyaribo – Nyamira governor

Overall, Kisii University Vice-Chancellor Prof Nathan Ogechi is set to lead the exercise that will pave the way for the second University in Gusiiland.

Elsewhere, the controversy surrounding the construction of Nyamira University has in recent months caused divisions amongst local politicians.

Talks about the establishment of a university in Nyamira that started during the time of pioneer governor John Nyagarama are finally taking shape in the regime of Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo.

The Commission for University Education is expected to work closely with Kisii University in the inception of Nyamira University.
