History of the Technical University of Kenya Since 1961 and Founders

The history of the Technical University of Kenya dates back to the early 60s when Kenya was on the eve of her independence. The varsity has since excelled through different levels to the prestigious TUK that we know today.

The founders and alumna have long shared a common interest in the development of competent, practical, and entrepreneurial graduates with a bigger goal of promoting innovative solutions to various problems facing the world.

History of the Technical University of Kenya since 1961

The Technical University of Kenya better known as TUK is a prestigious learning centre located opposite the Times Tower and along Haile Selassie Avenue next to the City Square Post Office.

Here are five little-known facts about the profile of TUK.

1. TUK is a brainchild of RTCEA and KTI

The University of London facilitated the formation of the Royal Technical College of East Africa (RTCEA) in 1960. Within the premised was housed the Kenya Technical Institute (KTI).

Soon after, RTCEA was renamed the Royal College Nairobi.

2. TUK was established in 1961

When was TUK established? The Technical University of Kenya was founded in 1961 courtesy of the Willoughby Report which was first published in 1949.

The increased student population at RTCEA led to the relocation of KTI as an independent institution. The Kenya Polytechnic would soon be born out of KTI.

3. Registration by the Ministry of Education in 1967

The Ministry of Education registered TUK as a post-secondary educational institution on January 18th, 1967.

Initially assigned a student capacity of 2,075, TUK now accommodates more than 10,000 comrades.

4. Relocation to the Central Business District

As the population grew, TUK established itself within Nairobi’s central business district.

As we speak, TUK is a trusted center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs which include DipTech, BTech, BPhil, BEng, and BSc.

5. TUK was charted in 2013

The Technical University of Kenya is now a recognized higher learning institution following the award of varsity charter by President Mwai Kibaki in 2013.
