History of Multimedia University Since 1948

MMU operates a couple of campuses with the main campus near the western side of the Nairobi National Park on Magadi Road, Nairobi.

1. MMU was founded in 1948

Multimedia University was founded in 1948 as the East African Telecommunications Training Institution.

It was later renamed the Kenya Posts and Telecommunications Corporation Training School following the collapse of EAC in 1977.

2. It operated as a subsidiary of Telkom Kenya

In 1992, KPTCTS was renamed the Kenya College of Communications Technology (KCCT).

It would continue operations as a subsidiary of Telkom Kenya.

3. MMU became a constituent college of JKUAT in 2008

In 2008, KCCT was upgraded to Multimedia University College of Kenya.

In addition, it became a constituent college of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, JKUAT.

4. MMU Awarded charter in 2013, with 2 campuses

After five years of operations as a constituent college under JKUAT, MMU was awarded a charter on March 1, 2013.

Former president Mwai Kibaki conferred the charter to the full-fledged Multimedia University of Kenya.

MMU now runs two campuses, one along Magadi Road and the other within Nairobi CBD.

5. Rapid student enrolment effect 2013

MMU which had 3,000 learners in 2013 is now a study centre for more than 10,000 students.

Steady growth is attributed to the ongoing infrastructural development and diversification of faculties.

6. Establishment of an ICT Museum

Multimedia University runs an ICT Museum located within the main campus which sits along Magadi Road in Nairobi City County.

For the record, the facility is outstanding as the largest ICT museum in East and Central Africa.

7. Recognition of excellence in 2012

MMU was in 2012 identified as a key player in the field of Information and Communication Technology.

The institution remains a top-ranking public university in Kenya in ICT excellence.
