It was established through the Pwani University Act, 2013, which was enacted by the Kenyan government to address the higher education needs of the coastal region of Kenya.

1. Establishment of Pwani University in 2007

Pwani University, initially called Kilifi Institute of Agriculture, was first established as a constituent college of Kenyatta University on August 23rd, 2007 with orders from President Mwai Kibaki.

By October, it had admitted at least 200 students in various faculties and courses.

2. Award of charter in 2013

Pwani University sitting on a 600-acre parcel of land became a full-fledged university on 31st January, 2013, following the award of a charter.

At this time, the university enrolment had exceeded 4,000.

3. Holding the first graduation in 2010

A founding cohort of learners admitted to various certificate and diploma courses in 2007 graduated in 2010.
