History of Strathmore University since 1961, Campuses and Founders

The history of Strathmore University dates back to the pre-colonial era when Kenya was on the eve of her independence. The varsity has since expanded into a research center with marketable programs.

Most importantly, the vice chancellor, Dr. Vincent Ogutu, is keen on promoting alumnae linkages and exchange programs with world-class universities.

Major faculties at Strathmore University include Accountancy, Administration, Commerce, Finance, Management, and Information Technology.

When was Strathmore founded?

1. Strathmore University started in 1961

The prestigious Strathmore was established in 1961 as an Advanced-level Sixth Form College.

Initial disciplines included subjects relating to science and Arts. The institution is the first one of its kind to accommodate all races, religions, and social diversity.

2. The first intake happened in 1966

Opus Dei founder, Saint Josemaria Escriva, not only inspired but also encouraged the incorporation of Strathmore University.

In March 1966, the school admitted 25 accountancy students with full sponsorship from Shell East Africa.

These pioneering learners later sat for the UK-based Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) exams.

3. Receiving 5 acres of land from the government

In 1986, the Government of Kenya donated 5 acres of land on Ole Sangale Road, Madaraka Estate.

The Madaraka Campus project was fully supported by the board of trustees, the European Union, and the Italian government.

4. Establishing eLearning and merging with Kianda College

Strathmore opened a post-modern Distance Learning Centre in the wake of 1992.

A year later, it merged with Kianda College in the process, relocating to Ole Sangale Road within Madaraka Estate.

5. Becoming a university in 2002

Strathmore started operating as a university in 2002, offering courses in the Faculty of Commerce and the Faculty of Information Technology.

The varsity graduated its first batch in 2004 and was later approved for a charter in 2007.

In 2018, the Institute of Management and Technology was launched to meet the need for TVET training in the country.

Strathmore is an academic center for about 10,000 students from across the regional divide. Even so, the institution continues to evolve as per the immediate needs of the local populace.
