History of USIU Africa University since 1969

The USA-based USIU was founded in 1927 and later branched to Kenya in 1969 to bridge cross-cultural understanding and the need for international curricula.

At first, the varsity offered a limited number of courses in the fields of business, social sciences, and international relations. The courses on offer have since tripled.

1. USIU founders in Kenya are Dr. Frederick and McDonald

The founders of USIU in the Kenyan academic arena are Dr. Frederick and his colleague McDonald.

The duo were driven by the need to bridge educational gaps between the U.S. and Africa.

2. The Nairobi campus was built in 1989

After operating in temporary structures for about two decades, USIU eventually established its permanent premises in 1989.

It was eventually accredited by the Commission for Higher Education (CUE) in Kenya. USIU with about 10,000 students in enrolment is located in Nairobi City, off Thika road along USIU Road.

3. Renaming to USIU Africa in 2011

In 2011, USIU underwent a significant transformation, rebranding as USIU Africa to better reflect its focus on the African continent.

This rebranding was accompanied by an emphasis on entrepreneurship, leadership, and sustainable development, aligning with the broader goals of the African Unionโ€™s Agenda 2063.
