Awori launched his political career in the early 60s when Kenya was still under British colonial rule.

At first, he joined the independence movement and became a prolific member of the KANU Party which was at the time headed by Kenya’s first president Jomo Kenyatta.

On attaining independence in 1963, Moody Awori became a civil servant in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

He later worked as a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development.

In 1983, Awori was appointed to the Kenyan Parliament as a member of the ruling KANU. After that, he became a Minister for Finance, Planning, and Foreign Affairs.

He was widely regarded as a technocrat and a skilled administrator during his time in government.

In 2002, Awori became the running mate of presidential aspirant Mwai Kibaki and eventually vice president on December 30th, 2002. The duo went straight into the State House based on reform and anti-corruption.

During his time as Deputy President, Awori focused on promoting economic development and reducing poverty in Kenya. Apart from fighting corruption, he promoted transparent governance.

In 2008, he retired from politics after serving for more than five decades in various government positions. Moody Awori is now a respected Kenyan figure.

Moody Awori of the Roman Catholic faith is the son of Canon Jeremiah Awori and Mariamu Awori with an ancestral home in Butere Constituency.

He attended Mangu High School and Kakamega School in the 1930s before enrolling for further studies at Makerere University in Uganda.

On matters of family, Moody Awori married Rose Awori with whom he sired 5 children, now in their adult years.
