Musyoka first contested for a parliamentary seat in 1983. The 20 year old failed to secure the Kitui North Constituency seat.

Luckily, Kalonzo claimed the seat in 1985 in a by-election occasioned by a resignation.

He rose to the position of an MP against all the odds that loomed in a then one party state Kenya.
