Heated debates on who will succeed Governor James Ongwae are catching flames across the county. As a result, voters are busy taking sides with prevalent Kisii governor aspirants 2022. What is going on is nothing less of a hit and run campaigning season.

The Constitution of Kenya 2010 limits governors to a maximum of two terms. For this reason, Ongwae will be going home after the August Elections. As you would expect, several prominent Kisii politicians are curious and keen on replacing him.

List of 8 Kisii governor aspirants 2022

The Kisii people will decide their second county boss from the upcoming list of gubernatorial aspirants.

1. Aspirant governor Simba Arati – Bobasi Constituency

Dagoretti North MP, Simba Arati, is one of the most promising Kisii governor aspirants.

His presence in the race is a threat to rival candidates, now calling on him to quit Kisii politics.

Paul Simba Arati from Gucha District, Bobasi Constituency, was born November 28, 1981. He is, therefore, 40 years old as of 2022.

Hon Arati is an International Relations Masters’ Degree holder from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University.

He is also a right-hand man to the ODM Party leader, Raila Amollo Odinga.

2. Ezekiel Machogu Ombaki – Nyaribari Masaba

Machogu is a Member of Parliament now aligning his political ambitions for the position of Kisii County Governor.

Born in Nyaribari Masaba Constituency on January 1, 956, Ombaki is 66 years as of 2022.

MP Machogu moved from Nduru Boys to Agoro Sare High School and later the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Art in Business Administration.

Hon Ombaki is a game-changer in politics and is unlikely to back down until he has achieved.

3. Aspirant governor Sam Ongeri – Nyaribari Masaba Constituency

Kisii County Senator, Professor Sam Ongeri, is in the middle of the steaming Kisii politics.

The former Cabinet Minister of Education is from Gesusu in Nyaribari Masaba Constituency.

While he is the most qualified candidate, locals have mixed reactions to his age.

Samson Kegengo Ongeri, born February 23, 1938, is 84 years as of 2022.

Nevertheless, Sam Ongeri is a skilled physician from multiple institutions including the University of Bombay, Edinburg University, University of London, Royal College of Physicians (UK), and the University of Nairobi.

In addition, he is experienced in matters of foreign affairs, corporate governance, international policies, and politics.

Defecting from ODM to DAP-K Party is among the latest news on his candidature.

4. Dr Chris Mogere Obure – Bobasi Constituency

Chris Obure, the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, and former Senator Kisii County is eyeing to succeed James Ongwae.

Dr Christopher Mogere Obure born September 29, 1943, is 78 years old as of 2022. He comes from Boigesa Village, Itibo Division, Bobasi Constituency.

The Kisii Boys High School alumni is a Commerce Degree graduate from the University of Nairobi.

Obure previously served at the national level as a Cabinet Minister of public works, finance, and industrialization.

Besides, he is also a long-time Member of Parliament in Bobasi Constituency.

5. Charles Chweya Matoke – Nyaribari Masaba Constituency

Matoke Charles is one of the youths fighting to replace Ongwae as the second governor in Kisii County.

The young governor aspirant is from Bogeche Village in Ichuni ward, Nyaribari Masaba Constituency.

He was born on December 19, 1985, making him 36 years old as of 2022.

Matoke Charles is an alumnus of St. Mary’s Mosocho primary school and Kisii High School.

Matoke is equally a Master of Arts Degree in International Relations/Security Policy graduate from St. Mary’s University, US.

Chweya who has been working as an Automated Logistical Specialist within the US Army, since 2012, made a memorable return to the country in 2020.

6. James Omingo Magara – South Mugirango

The outspoken Omingo Magara is a former legislature, turned a dairy farmer, and now new energy in the Kisii gubernatorial contest.

Born on September 20, 1961, Omingo Magara age is 60 years as of 2022. He was an MP in South Mugirango Constituencybefore switching to dairy farming.

Omingo attended Nduru High School and proceeded to a higher learning institution under trying financial circumstances.

Hon Omingo will likely cause a huge leadership wave in the upcoming general elections.

7. Manson Oyongo Nyamweya – South Mugirango

Oyongo is a former Member of Parliament with a good reputation as a man of his word.

The former South Mugirango Constituency MP born on September 28, 1950, is 71 years old as of 2022.

Manson Nyamweya Oyongo profile indicates that he is an alumnus of Uriri Boys High School and the University of Nairobi (UoN).

Oyongo is majorly a politician with huge stakes in profitable businesses and properties.

8. Female Kisii aspirant governor Rachel Otundo – Nyaribari Chache

The Kisii Governance Watch secretary and ring leader, Rachael Otundo, is a bold female gubernatorial aspirant in Kisii County.

Miss Otundo of about 55 years is from Ibeno village in Nyaribari Chache Constituency.

She schooled at Ibeno Primary School and Ichuni Girls High School.

Later on, Otundo graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Arts in Land Economics.

Political Activist Otundo Rachael is critical of women in society. She often speaks on Egesa FM about issues affecting the larger Gusii community

Kisii governor aspirants in 2022 general elections

The Kisii County gubernatorial race has attracted atleast 5 contestants. These will continually lock horns until after the elections.

Aspirants who have so far switched to other political posts include Daniel Manduku, Richard Momoima Onyonka, Don Bosco Gichana, Janet Ongera, Joash Maangi, and James Arasa Oyagi.

A majority of Kisii governor aspirants in 2022 are familiar members of the political class. These will face a line-up of youthful candidates with a strong inclination to the age factor advantage.
