Heated debates on who will succeed Governor James Ongwae come 2022 are catching flames in every part of Kisii County. As a result, voters are busy taking sides even as candidate politicians finalise on their manifestos. What lies ahead is nothing less of a hit and run campaigning season. Among those concerned on the list of Kisii governor aspirants 2022 is the diaspora community.
The 2010 Constitution of Kenya limits governors to a maximum of two terms. For this reason, Ongwae will be going home after the 2022 general elections. As you would expect, a number of prominent Kisii politicians are curious and keen on replacing him.

1. Paul Simba Arati

Kisii County Senator, Professor Sam Ongeri, is in the middle of the steaming Kisii politics. While he is the most qualified candidate, locals have mixed reactions about his age.
Samson Kegengo Ongeri, born February 23, 1938, is 83 years as of 2021. The former Cabinet Minister of Education is from Gesusu in Nyaribari Masaba Constituency.
Sam Ongeri is a skilled physician from multiple institutions including the University of Bobmay, Edinburg University, University of London, Royal College of Physicians (UK), and University of Nairobi.
Professor Ongeri is a particularly experienced on matters foreign affairs, corporate governance, international policies, and politics.
3. Dr Chris Mogere Obure
Chris Obure, the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, and former Senator Kisii County is eyeing to succeed James Ongwae.
Dr Christopher Mogere Obure born September 29, 1943 is 77 years old as of 2021. He comes from Boigesa Village, Itibo Division, Bobasi Constituency.
The Kisii Boys High School alumni is a Commerce Degree graduate from the University of Nairobi.
Obure previously served at the national level as a Cabinet Minister of public works, finance, and industrialization. He is a long-time Member of Parliament in Bobasi Constituency.
4. Janet Ongera – female Kisii governor aspirants
Janet Ongera, a Women Representative Member of Parliament, is the most influential female in the list of aspirant Kisii County governors.
Hon Janet Ongera, about 55 years old, celebrates her birthday on July 5th. However, she is yet to reveal details about her age and born year.
Janet is from Nyamache sub-county within Bobasi Constituency.
Ongera from Moi Girls is a Bachelor of Law graduate from the University of Nairobi.
Hon Janet Ongera is a voice on women rights and girl child education. She is well spoken for helping the widows and sitting in the African Parliament Leader Committee.
5. Richard Momoima Onyonka
Richard Onyonka is a celebrated Kisii leader in the National Assembly of Kenya where he has been serving for three consecutive terms.

6. Ezekiel Machogu Ombaki
Machogu is a Member of Parliament now aligning his political ambitions for the position of Kisii County Governor.

MP Machogu moved from Nduru Boys to Agoro Sare High School and later the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Art in Business Administration.

7. Don Bosco Gichana
The pain of serving in Kisongo Prison of Arusha, Tanzania, for five years did not suppress Don Bosco’s political dream.
He was detained between 2013 and 2018 for allegedly engaging in money laundering business alongside Mr Mwale.
Don Bosco received a warm welcome in the country following his release on Tuesday, September 18, 2018.
He has since regained his political crown after suffering severe detainment during the late President John Pombe Magufuli’s regime.

He is son to a former KNUT Treasurer official, Mzee Gichana. Unfortunately, his mother, Mrs Celine Nyaboke, died while Don Bosco was serving a 5 year jail term.

8. Daniel Manduku – top Kisii governor aspirants 2022
Manduku is a former National Construction Authority (NCA), chief executive officer, and the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), managing director.
The aspirant governor was born on February 5, 1971, making him 50 years as of 2021. He is a son of Nyaribari Masaba Constituency.
Furthermore, MD Daniel Manduku is a Doctorate of Business Administration holder from USIU.
His untimely exit from the Kenya Ports Authority, where he was a top executive until March 2020, has been linked to impunity allegations.
9. Manson Oyongo Nyamweya
Oyongo is a former member of parliament with a good reputation as a man of his word.
The former South Mugirango Constituency MP is 70 years old, given he was born on September 28, 1950.
Manson Nyamweya Oyongo profile indicates that he is an alumni of Uriri Boys High School and the University of Nairobi (UoN).
Oyongo is majorly a politician with huge stakes in profitable businesses and properties.
10. DG Joash Maangi – Kisii Governor aspirants 2022
The Deputy Governor Kisii County under James Ongwae’s term in office is a wealthy man, now determined to succeed his boss.
DG Maangi of 1967 is about 52 years as of 2021. He comes from Tendere Village, in Bomachoge Constituency.
Also, he is a resident of Minnesota, in the United States of America.
Maangi & Company Advocates boss studied Bachelor of Law at the University of Nairobi.

11. James Omingo Magara
The outspoken Omingo Magara is a former legislature, turned a dairy farmer, and now a new energy in the Kisii gubernatorial contest.
Born on September 20, 1961, Omingo Magara age is 59 years. He was an MP in South Mugirango Constituency before switching to dairy farming.
Omingo attended Nduru High School and proceeded to higher learning institution under trying financial circumstances.

12. Rachel Kemunto Otundo
The Kisii Governance Watch secretary and ring leader, Rachael Otundo, is a likely female gubernatorial aspirant in Kisii County.
Miss Otundo, now 54 years old, is from Ibeno village in Nyaribari Chache Constituency.
Rachael Otundo schooled at Ibeno Primary School and Ichuni Girls High School.
She later graduated from the University of Nairobi with Bachelor of Arts in Land Economics.

13. Charles Chweya Matoke
Matoke Charles is one of the youths fighting to replace Ongwae as second governor in Kisii County,
The young governor aspirant of 35 years is from Bogeche village in Ichuni ward, Nyaribari Masaba Constituency.
Matoke Charles is an alumni of St. Mary’s Mosocho primary school and Kisii High School.
Besides, Matoke is a Master of Arts Degree in International Relations/ Security policy graduate from St. Mary’s University, US.
Matoke who has been working as an Automated Logistical Specialist within the US Army, since 2012, made a memorable return to the country in 2020.
14. James Arasa Oyagi – youngest Kisii governor aspirants
The determined James Arasa is the youngest in the list of aspirant Kisii County governors.
Arasa James now about 30 years comes from Ichuni Ward in Nyaribari Masaba Constituency.
Arasa James, a recent graduate from Kisii University is a Biology / Chemistry teacher by profession.
James Arasa Oyagi has already released a 10 point manifesto that will steer his way against famed and experienced aspirants.

The Kisii County gubernatorial race has attracted at least 14 contestants. These will continually lock horns until after the elections.
Charles Matoke and James Arasa are by far the least popular in the contest. Nonetheless, these youths are making significant progress in their run for popularity.

The death of Simeon Nyachae left Omogusii questioning the political interests of his son, Charles Nyachae.
Latest trends indicate that Charles is a new hustler in town after choosing to support the UDA Party leader and DP Dr. William Samoei Ruto.
However, Charles Nyachae is yet to reveal his political ambitions in elective positions.
Perhaps, he is comfortable being a Judge of East African Court Of Justice (East African Legislative Assembly).
Will Dr Fred Matiang’i run for governor Kisii County?
No, the super cabinet secretary in the government of President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta will not seek to succeed Ongwae.
So far, Dr Matiangi has not declared any political interest in elective politics. That said, he is unlikely to run in the upcoming general elections.
